Original Songs You’ll See – Original SongThis song was partially inspired by a breakup in high school. I wanted to write a piece that would serve as a reminder to myself and others that there are people out there who want to see you fail. It’s a lot of hard work, but with the right amount of work and focus, you can prove them wrong. Musically I took inspiration from the strumming pattern of Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” but used a more relaxed sound. Curtain Call – Original songIn the second of two songs I wrote during the summer of 2019, I wanted to pay homage to my love of theater. Growing up I did community theater shows and school plays. Doing these shows was special not only because of the skills and creative experience I got out of it, but it was also an opportunity to share my love of storytelling with an audience. I like lifting the veil between the performer and the audience. Despite how often we praise those in the performing arts, we tend to forget that these are real people as well. I decided that for this song I wanted to make the message more about insecurity. The actor wonders if they’ve made a lasting impact on the people in the audience or if they were even worth remembering. This also plays with the mentality of feeling inadequate and attempting to please those around them even when it may not be worth it. O Mistress Mine – Shakespeare song by Grace LaffertyIn high school I was fascinated with Shakespeare. The lyrics of this song are from his play Twelfth Night, so I was surprised when I heard it sung in the 2010 movie version of The Tempest, one of my favorite plays. This isn’t a well known version of the song, but I felt drawn to it for some reason. I brought it in to my senior year composition class and got the green light from my teacher to play around with it. This was a solo project, so I wanted to explore what I could do using just my voice, so I took the melody that was written for the film and created a vocal arrangement to create a sort of haunting and ethereal kind of sound.
